PGD (Pre-Implantation Genetic Diagnosis) Q&A
What is a preimplantation genetic diagnosis?
A preimplantation genetic diagnosis identifies chromosomal abnormalities in your embryo before your provider implants it in your uterus. It’s an option for you if you get in vitro fertilization (IVF) at Elite IVF.
In vitro fertilization requires you to take hormone injections to produce more eggs, extract the eggs, and fertilize them outside of your body before your provider implants the embryos. With a preimplantation genetic diagnosis, you can make sure the embryo is healthy before you implant it.
While your embryo grows in a lab, the team at Elite IVF uses a sample of its cells for testing. During testing, they freeze the embryos. They evaluate the DNA in the cellular samples for genes that could indicate future complications, which takes about a week. If your embryo has no genetic problems, the team safely places it in your uterus and waits for implantation.
Am I a good candidate for preimplantation genetic diagnosis?
The Elite IVF team discusses the process with you in detail and evaluates you to determine if you’re a candidate for preimplantation genetic diagnosis. Your provider might recommend preimplantation genetic diagnosis if you:
- Carry a sex-linked genetic disorder
- Carry a single-gene disorder
- Are older than 35 when you get pregnant
- Have recurrent pregnancy loss
- Have failed more than one fertility treatment
- Have a chromosomal disorder of your own
You should also consider preimplantation genetic disorders if your partner carries genetic disorders or has a chromosomal disorder.
Can I benefit from preimplantation genetic diagnosis?
A preimplantation genetic diagnosis can help identify more than 100 different genetic disorders, including disorders that could end your pregnancy. Once you get your results, you and your partner can decide if you want to proceed with the implantation or if you’d like to try again with another embryo.
A few examples of conditions identifiable with preimplantation genetic testing include:
- Down syndrome
- Sickle cell anemia
- Fragile-X syndrome
- Tay-Sachs disease
- Cystic fibrosis
- Muscular dystrophy
- Huntington’s disease
The team at Elite IVF can answer all of your questions about the tests’ potential results and the conditions they can identify. The test itself doesn’t put you or your embryo at risk of complications. In most cases, the embryo is still able to implant after preimplantation genetic diagnosis.
